Who we are

Southerly Insurance Australia Pty Ltd, of Level 4, 9 Sounding Lane, Pyrmont NSW 2009, would be the entity responsible for personal information collected through this website and through its insurance products. No ABN or AFSL number is published: this is a demonstration site, and a number in ASIC’s real format could belong to a genuine licensee. The address is invented and Sounding Lane does not exist.

What we collect

We collect only what we need to quote, issue and administer a policy, and to assess a claim.

• Identity and contact information. Name, date of birth, residential and postal address, email address and telephone numbers.
• Risk information. Details of the property, vehicle, business or trip being insured, including address, construction, floor level, vehicle details and intended use.
• Insurance history. Previous claims, previous policy cancellations or refusals, and driving history where relevant.
• Payment information. Bank account or card details for premium collection, processed by our payment provider and not stored in full by us.
• Claims information. What happened, when, supporting documents, assessor reports, repairer quotes, and in some cases police or medical reports.
• Website information. Pages visited and general location derived from IP address, for aggregate analytics only.

Sensitive information

Health information is sensitive information under the Privacy Act and we collect it only where it is necessary, principally for travel insurance existing condition assessments and for personal injury elements of a claim. We collect it with your consent and we do not use it for any purpose other than the one it was collected for.

Why we collect it

• To assess an application, calculate a premium and decide whether to offer cover.
• To issue, administer, vary, renew and cancel policies.
• To assess, investigate, manage and pay claims, and to recover from third parties.
• To detect and prevent insurance fraud, including through industry data exchanges.
• To comply with our obligations under the Corporations Act, the Insurance Contracts Act, the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act, and the General Insurance Code of Practice.

Who we disclose it to

We disclose personal information to: our reinsurers, including the Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation for eligible cyclone risks; assessors, investigators and loss adjusters; repairers, builders, trades and suppliers appointed on a claim; the Insurance Reference Service and equivalent industry claims databases; our claims and policy administration providers; legal advisers and debt recovery agents; and regulators and law enforcement where we are required to.

Overseas disclosure

Some of our reinsurers are located in the United Kingdom, Bermuda, Singapore and Switzerland, and some technology providers store data in Australian and New Zealand data centres. Where we disclose information overseas we take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

Direct marketing

We may contact you about products related to the one you hold. You can opt out at any time by replying to any message, by ringing (02) 5550 1100, or by writing to us, and we will action it within five business days at no cost to you.

Access, correction and complaints

You can ask for access to the personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it. We will respond within 30 days. There is no fee for a request, although we may charge a reasonable cost for retrieving a large volume of archived material, and we will tell you before we do.

If you are not satisfied, you can take the matter to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992, or to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority on 1800 931 678.

Security and retention

Information is held in access controlled systems, encrypted in transit and at rest, and accessible only to staff who need it for their role. We retain policy and claims records for seven years after a policy ends or a claim closes, which is the period our regulatory obligations require, and then we destroy or de-identify them.

Cookies

This site sets no advertising or cross site tracking cookies. It sets no cookies at all beyond those strictly necessary for the site to function, and it loads no third party scripts.
